There are no public transport or taxi services on Christmas Island, so hiring a car is the most convenient way to explore the island. Vehicle availability is limited, and we strongly recommend booking your hire car well in advance of your arrival.
If you enjoy walking, exploring on foot is a wonderful way to experience the island's natural beauty and local charm. However, due to the island's size, hilly terrain and distances between attractions, relying solely on walking is not recommended.

BOOK CAR HIRE
Planning to rent a car on Christmas Island?
Australian road rules, including left-hand side driving, apply on Christmas Island. For added safety, Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) are available for hire at no cost from the Christmas Island Police Station.
Vehicles are limited, so we highly recommend booking your car in advance. Most roads on Christmas Island are unsealed, so 4WDs offer the best flexibility for exploring the island.
dRIVING oN CHRISTMAS ISLAND
Some tips for those visitors planning to drive whilst on Christmas Island
– drive on the left side of the road
– bring a valid drivers licence. If you are an international visitor, you are able to drive with your foreign licence for three months. If your licence is not in English, you will need an International Drivers Permit (IDP) from your home country
– wear a seatbelt
– follow the speed limits and traffic signs
– do not drive while under the influence of alcohol
– do not use a mobile (cell) phone while driving
– wear a helmet when riding a motorbike or bicycle
– road conditions vary, particularly after heavy rains and you should check conditions first and then proceed with caution on some of the tracks
– slow down and go around crabs on the road when safe to do so
– some roads will be closed during the red crab migration.
Car hire is highly recommended.
