HOW TO GET TO CHRISTMAS ISLAND

Virgin Australia flies to Christmas Island directly from Perth twice per week (Tuesdays & Fridays), with connections to most Australian capital cities. The flight takes about three hours and can be booked directly with the airline or through a travel agent. After departing Perth, the plane arrives to Christmas Island, then continues to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands on Tuesdays. On Fridays the flight stops at Learmonth Airport to refuel, continues to Cocos Keeling Islands and then arrives on Christmas Island before returning to Perth.

christmas island CLIMATE

Christmas Island has a tropical equatorial climate characterised by distinct wet and dry seasons. The wet season, from November to February, brings monsoons with heavy rainfall due to north-west winds. In contrast, the rest of the year sees lower temperatures and humidity thanks to south-east trade winds, accompanied by less rain.

While tropical cyclones occasionally come close during the monsoon season, none have directly hit the island since its settlement. The island receives an average annual rainfall of 1,930 mm, mainly falling between November and May, with February and March being the wettest months.

Humidity levels remain consistently high, ranging from 80% to 90%, due to oceanic influence. Temperatures vary only slightly, with a maximum of 28°C in April and a minimum of 22°C in August.
