50TH ANNIVERSARY COIN ISSUED BY THE PERTH MINT
The Perth Mint celebrates Christmas Island’s 50th anniversary, since it was proclaimed an Australian Territory on 1 October 1958, with the release of a stunning Australian legal tender 1oz proof coin struck from 99.9% pure silver.
The coin features the Golden Bosun bird, which is unique to Christmas Island, and a coloured representation of a large Red Crab. The inscriptions CHRISTMAS ISLAND, AUSTRALIAN TERRITORY, 50 YEARS 1958 – 2008 and The Perth Mint’s historic ‘P’ mintmark all feature as part of the innovative design.
Each coin is housed in a teal coloured case and presented within an illustrated shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity recounting the history of Christmas Island.
