CHRISTMAS ISLAND

POST OFFICE

Christmas Island, one of Australia’s external territories, is a dot in the Indian Ocean close enough to Indonesia to have been rocked by earthquakes there. 10 degrees South and 105 degrees East, Christmas Island is an hour flight from Jakarta and a six hour flight from Perth, Western Australia.

The result of ancient volcanic activity and a later series of uplifts that raised the coral reef out of the ocean depths, Christmas Island is a dramatic oceanic island that has developed its own unique ecosystem. The National Park covering 63% of the island has been developed to protect the world’s rarest Booby bird and many other endemic species. - article by Jane Bennett for Wingspan.

We are separated from Indonesia by the depths of the Java Trench and imbued with Asian climate, culture and cuisine. Christmas Island is a diverse mix of Chinese, Malay and European cultures which is demonstrated by the number of temples and variety of religions on the island. Our history goes back to 1888, includes occupation by the Japanese during WW2 and a colourful mine and worker’s history.

Christmas Island is best known internationally for its unique stamps but can also boast a unique red crab migration, wildlife and birds.
